Abstract:

This paper presents a one way fluid-structure interaction model for analyzing the stress, strain and displacement of the human cornea under the action of negative intraocular pressure which occurs during phacoemulsification in cataract surgery. The research is a multi-disciplinary collaboration between solid mechanic engineering, mathematical and numerical analysis, fluid dynamic analysis and ophthalmology. Nonlinear finite element shell modeling has been used in conjunction with CFD modeling of anterior chamberof the eye to study the buckling behavior of the cornea under negative pressure. A whole eye model with both cornea and sclera has been used in order to achieve the best boundary condition for the peripheral region of the cornea. Hyper elastic material property has been used for both cornea and sclera. Also variable shell thickness has been used in construction of the geometry for the sake of accuracy. The results indicates that with increasing of mass flow rate which follows by the decrease in intraocular pressure, the cornea shows continues range of deformation increasing with the increase in mass flow rate.
