Abstract:

This research was an investigation of the attitudes of Iranian EFL students towards deductive and inductive approaches to grammar teaching. Another aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of these two approaches on the academic success of them. The research was based on a quantitative research design. ۳۰ university students from the Department of English Language and Literature of Lorestan University were assigned as participants. Students' feedback questionnaires were evaluated to get an insight into their attitudes towards deductive and inductive approaches and the effectiveness of these two approaches on the academic success. The results of the study revealed that when the academic success of the students are considered, deductive teaching of grammar is more effective than inductive teaching. These findings suggest that in teaching grammar to Iranian EFL students, lecturers should be aware of the needs and perceptions of their students.
