Abstract:

Roads are one of the most valuable assets owned by governments and contribute greatly to a nation's economy. However, the construction and preservation of pavement is currently very expensive. Since heavy trucks obviously cause more damage to the pavement, accurate truck counts and weight data should be collected. These data are primarily collected using highway Weigh In Motion (WIM) systems installed on highways capable of weighing high-speed trucks. However, current WIM technologies are extremely costly to install widely. Therefore, they lead to a lack of data needed to accurately evaluate pavement conditions. This research explores an alternative solution that is inexpensive and accurate and easy to install in new or existing ways. It also presents Wireless Vibration Network (WSN) load estimation algorithms that can measure the weight of moving trucks by optimizing and compressing compatible data by measuring pavement vibrations.
