Smart cities are created in order to efficiently manage energy consumption, manageurbanization, preserve the environment, improve standards related to the economy ofcitizens' lives, and empower them to use information and communication technologyeffectively. In smart cities, information and communication technology plays an importantand vital role in policy-making, decision-making, and the implementation offinal services. The main purpose of this article is to investigate the role of artificialintelligence, machine learning and deep reinforcement learning in the evolution ofsmart cities. The mentioned techniques will be effectively used to design the optimalpolicy according to the complex issues of the smart city. In the current research, fulldetails of the applications of artificial intelligence techniques and the application ofmachine learning in smart transportation systems, smart networks, cyber security andhealth system in a smart city will be introduced. Finally, we will present the existingchallenges as well as the directions for future research in which the mentioned techniquesplay a very important role in realizing the concept of a smart city.
