Abstract:
Groundwater is the main source of water in arid and semi-arid regions. Therefore, pollution of groundwater is amajor issue because aquifers and the contained groundwater are inherently susceptible to contamination fromland use and anthropogenic impacts. Groundwater investigations are becoming a concern for the need ofadditional and sustainable water resources to satisfy demographic growth and economic development of Tehrancity. Geo-electrical methods are more attractive in this regards, because they are cheaper, relatively easier toperform and executed in reasonable time. Together with hydro-chemical methods, geo-electrical methods areused in recent years for groundwater investigations. Groundwater represents about 50% of potable supply inTehran, capital city of Iran, with about 13.6 millions population. The need for protection and management ofTehran aquifer has been recognized. The characteristics of this aquifer system make groundwater vulnerable tocontamination. Therefore, groundwater pollution as a limiting factor for drinking water supply is an importanthindrance for a sustainable Development. Economic-technical efficient solutions are requested these days.In this paper, the feasibility of integrated use of vertical electrical sounding method (VES) by Schlumbergerarray and hydro-wells for the groundwater quality assessment in Yaftabad area in west Tehran for a nonlinearcorrelation study is investigated. Results demonstrate high concentration of nitrate and hardness in study areaand moderate degree correlation between true specific electrical resistivities values of aquifer and imperviouslayer, and the most major chemo-physical properties of groundwater
