Abstract:

Unless by means of sophisticated experimentation, for studying the behaviors of structural systems subjected to seismic poundings, implementing time integration analysis is essential. Time integration results in approximate responses, and, for the sake of reliability, it is conventional and recommended, to repeat the analyses with smaller time steps and compare them, once, and if needed, again and again. In this paper, considering that building pounding is one of the major reasons of seismic damages in metropolitan areas, the efficacy of the conventional time integration error control method is studied also based on a simple and recent study of the author. To state the conclusion in brief; as expected, the conventional error control method, though necessary, is unreliable.
