Abstract:

One of the physical features of Islamic architecture is the application of geometry in it and among these geometric strategies; the model of regulating symmetry has a special place. The question is what are the levels of application of symmetry in Islamic-Iranian architecture and what is the relationship between these levels. Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy and discusses the analysis of concepts and the solution of problems that arise from reflection on the issues of aesthetic perception. In this research, the main elements of beauty definition have been extracted. Principles such as proportion, balance, symmetry, order and numerous factors that affect the recognition of spatial patterns and understanding of aesthetics are listed. By examining and analyzing a valuable work of Islamic architecture, Imam Mosque of Isfahan in a descriptive-analytical method, we come to the conclusion that the patterns of symmetry in the four levels of regulatory axes, symmetrical plans and sub-plans, symmetrical views and components And symmetrical elements appear in Islamic architecture that these levels in a hierarchical relationship with each other, form a stepped pattern of symmetrical relationship in Islamic architecture. This stepped pattern leads to a special equilibrium that can justify the lack of boredom of symmetrical patterns in Islamic architecture and the inherent dynamics of this architecture.
