Abstract:

The aim of this study was to examine the mediating role of parenting styles in the relationship between mothers' early maladaptive schemas and their children's self-perception. Based on a descriptive-correlational design, ۲۱۰ male and female students aged ۸ to ۱۱ years old and their mothers were selected in west Tehran through nonrandom inhand sampling method. Students responded to the self-perception questionnaire (Mendaglio & Pyryt, ۱۹۹۵), and their mothers responded to the parenting styles questionnaire (Baumrind, ۱۹۷۳) and schema questionnaire (Young Short Form, ۱۹۹۸). The results of the path analysis test revealed that mothers' authoritative parenting style can have a mediating role in the relationship between mothers' early maladaptive schemas and children's self-perception. The results also indicated a negative correlation between mothers' early maladaptive schemas and children's self-perception. Also, there is a positive correlation between authoritative parenting style and children's self-perception and a negative correlation between authoritarian parenting style and children's honesty self-perception. Neglectful parenting style is not associated with any type of self-perception. Because mothers' early maladaptive schemas can predict their specific parenting styles and in turn, their children's self-perception, mothers' early maladaptive schemas can be modified to shape positive self-perception in children.
