Due to environmental regulations, solvent-based coatings are being replaced with water-borne formulations which contain lower VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) in the recent years. However, the main challenge is to obtain comparable or improved performance in water-borne systems at reasonable cost. The desired improvements include higher gloss, better wet edge, scratch resistance, resistance to chemical degradation and improved mechanical properties. One way to gain such improvements is the addition of inorganic nanoparticles, which may lead to better performance because of dramatically increased surface area of the filler as compared with that of conventional commercial micro-fillers of the coatings industry. The properties of the resultant nanoparticles containing coating are determined by the size, shape, spatial distribution of the filler particles and by the forces acting between the coating components and may vary a lot depending on the above mentioned parameters. In the present work, the effect of adding hydrophobic and hydrophilic nanoalumina particles on the turbidity, flow and hardness of a water-borne mono-component clearcoat is investigated.
