Abstract:

Photonic crystals (PC) are materials with a periodic refractive index distribution, which can inhibit the propagation of light in all directions for specific wavelength ranges (optical bandgap). One of the most important properties of such structures is their ability to tailor the path of propagation of light on the scale of the wavelength without diffraction losses (wave guiding property) [1].In the other hand randomness and effect of disorder on optical properties of materials is a subject of new researches. The especial behavior of light in random or disordered materials leads to events like localization of light and elongation of light path [2]. Also cheap and easy fabrication, small size (hundreds of nanometer), flexibility and other advantages of such materials attract researchers for using them in fabricating lasers and integrated optical circuits. Inserting randomness in ordered structures like photonic crystals can be considered as a start point for studying full random systems, although this subject itself has a wide usage in photonic material fabrications.Investigation the effect of disorder and imperfection in photonic crystal structures on their wave guiding properties was performed previously by two dimensional (2D) Monte Carlo simulation [1], approximated 2D and 3D model [3] and 1D analytical solution [4]; but none of these methods show the exact dynamics of light propagation in these structure. Here we use the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method [5], which solves Maxwell’s equations directly and gives the dynamical behavior of light, to simulate 2D propagation of light in different kinds of ordered and disordered photonic crystals, with various degrees of disorder
