Abstract:

Hippodamia variegata Goeze (Col.: Coccinellidae) is one of the important predators of aphids that its activitywas reported from different regions of Iran. In the present study, pre-imaginal development of this predatorfeeding on two whaet aphids, Green wheat aphid, Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) and Russian wheat aphid,Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko) (Hem.: Aphididae), was evaluated under laboratory conditins at 25±1°C,65±5% RH, and a photoperiod of 16:8 h (L:D). To accomplish the experiments, a cohort of 100 newly ageeggs (maximum age of 12 h) were randomly selected and transferred individually within containers(12×10×5 cm). After hatching, larvae were reared various stages of each prey and duration of differentimature stages of H. variegata were recorded until adult emergence. Based on obtained results, duration ofincubation period, first to fourth instar larvae, prepupal and pupal stages and total immature stages of H.variegata feeding on two different host aphids were calculated. The duration of above-mentioned periods inH. variegatawith feeding on Green wheat aphid were 2.32±0.10, 2.19±0.05, 1.51±0.06, 1.52±0.05,2.08±0.05, 0.73±0.04, 3.14±0.04 and 13.85±0.15 days, respectively, and on Russian wheat aphid, duration ofthese perids were 2.51±0.04, 2.04±0.05, 1.20±0.04, 1.62±0.04, 2.29±0.05, 0.73±0.03, 3.16±0.04 and13.50±0.09 days, respectively. In addition, the hatching rate of this predator on Green wheat aphid andRussian wheat aphid were 66.06 and 73.45%, respectively. Preimaginal mortality of H. vaiegata on twopreys were 46.79 and 32.73%, respectively. The results of this study could be useful in biological controlprogram of aphids in wheat fields.
