OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between serum level of testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin in men with type ۲ diabetes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this case-control study, forty men aged ۴۰-۷۰ with type ۲ diabetes mellitus were randomly selected and compared with ۴۰ non-diabetic men. The two groups were matched for their age and BMI. After complete observation and examination, fasting blood sugar, postprandial blood sugar, total and free testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin and HbA۱c were measured.
RESULTS: The mean serum level of total testosterone was ۹.۶۵ ± ۲.۱۶ mg/dl in diabetic patients and ۱۲.۷۷ ± ۳ mg/dl in non-diabetic subjects which was significantly different (P = ۰.۰۰۰۱). The mean value of free serum level of testosterone was significantly higher in non-diabetic group (۱۴.۹۶ ± ۴.۹۷ mg/dl) in comparison with diabetic group (۹.۵۵ ± ۸.۱۴ mg/dl, P = ۰.۰۰۰۱).
CONCLUSION: In this study we found a lower level of total testosterone, free testosterone, and in lesser extent sex hormone-binding globulin in men with type ۲ diabetes comparing to non-diabetic men.
