In this paper, a new control strategy is proposed for a Series Compensator (SC) operating in thenormal mode with the aim of fault current limiting in a distribution system including DG units. After thefault detection, the proposed control strategy is activated to limit the fault current for a proper interruptionof the breaker. To optimize the parameters of the SC controller, Harmony Search Algorithm (HSA) is used.The proposed control strategy is modeled and simulated on a 2-bus distribution system and the simulationresults are presented. The obtained results prove the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy for adual functional SC.
