As an advanced and efficient design method, evolutionary topology optimization methods are widely used for structural optimization to improve the performance of structures. In recent years, a kind of evolutionary method called smooth evolutionary structural optimization (SESO) has been widely studied and formulated for different design criteria. This paper presents a comparative analysis of two popular approaches of SESO the stress-based approach, and the compliance-based approach. For this purpose, a benchmark plane stress problem is analyzed using quadrilateral square elements. The advantage and disadvantages of each approach are discussed, it will be illustrated that the SESO method is capable of smoothing the values of stress and compliance values in both approaches, the effect of variation in different parameters will be explored briefly and a limitation value of removal will be presented. The results indicate that, for equal parameters of optimization, the results are generated faster in the compliance-based method compared to stress based approach causing an unstable optimization process. In both approaches, topologies vary according to the boundary condition and optimization parameters defined.
