Practical Geotechnical Risk Assessment

Systematic risk assessment procedures are well established and often rely on the principle of decision making under uncertainty, which in turn requires that one is able to assess and describe the uncertainties. Theoretical probabilistic and statistical techniques to do this are available, but have found limited use in practice. This paper will, after a brief introduction to the assessment process, provide practical techniques to deal with uncertainties, and assess risk. This is illustrated using the example of tunnel exploration planning. The techniques are spreadsheet-based, simple to implement, and obviouss to the assessor.
