Abstract:
This empirical research study investigates the current trends and future prospects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in English Language Teaching (ELT). Employing an empirical and mixed-methods approach, including a survey of English language teachers and a case study of an AI-enhanced English language learning platform, the study explores teachers' perceptions, experiences, and concerns related to the use of AI in ELT, as well as the design, implementation, and impact of an AI-based language learning tool. In other words, the current study tried to see to what extent English language teachers perceive AI as beneficial or challenging for enhancing language learning outcomes. The findings suggest that while a significant number of teachers recognize the potential benefits of AI in ELT, such as personalized learning and instant feedback, they also express concerns about data privacy, technical issues, and the potential for dehumanizing education. The case study demonstrates that the AI-enhanced platform effectively supports language learning, improves learner motivation, and facilitates teachers' work. These implications highlight the need for careful consideration of teachers' concerns, ensuring data privacy and security, and striking a balance between human-centered and technology-enhanced pedagogy in the integration of AI in ELT. Further research is needed to explore effective strategies for incorporating AI and to assess its long-term impact on learner outcomes.
