The direct, three-component mannich reactions in ethanolic mixture of thiopyran-4-one system proceeded to afford the corresponding β-amino ketones with excellent anti selectivity in good to high yields within short time. The process is mild, efficient and environmentally benign with the use of catalytic amount of nano ZrO(2). The catalyst was easily separated from the reaction mixture and was recycled five times with no significant loss of its catalytic activity. Products structures were confirmed by their spectroscopic data and X-ray crystallography analysis.
