A new methodology for designing optimal systematic PID controller is presented in this paper. Our design is based on Bacterial Foraging Algorithm(BFA), BFA is based on the social foraging behaviour of E. coli bacteria and developed simulation models based on the principles of foraging theory that viewforaging as optimization. This provides us with novel models of their foraging behaviour and with new methods for distributed nongradient optimization. BFAas a design method has been applied to the Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) system. The controller is ableto follow the input reference. Another PID controller designed via an ordinary PSO method is applied. Finally A PID controller designed by Ziegler-Nicholsmethod is also implemented to the same problem. A comparison between the obtained results shows the effectiveness of the proposed (BFA) method
