Maintaining a healthy gut microbiome is crucial for overall human health and well-being. Theuse of nanocarriers to deliver probiotics, prebiotics, or other microbiome-modulating agents tothe gastrointestinal tract offers a promising approach for optimizing gut microbiomecomposition and promoting digestive and immune health. This review article explores thepotential of microbiome-targeted nanotherapeutics in addressing various gut-related disordersand enhancing general gut health. The article discusses the advantages of nanocarrier-baseddelivery systems, such as improved bioavailability, targeted drug delivery, and enhancedstability of the active ingredients. Additionally, it examines the various types of nanocarriers,including liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, and metal-based nanoparticles, and theirsuitability for gut microbiome-targeted applications. The review also highlights the currentstate of research, showcasing the latest advancements and clinical evidence supporting theefficacy of microbiome-targeted nanotherapeutics. Finally, the article explores the potentialchallenges and future perspectives in the development and implementation of these innovativegut health optimization strategies.
