Abstract:

As it is known, since the existence of the world earthquakes have been occurring. Structures were damaged or completely demolished as a result of these earthquakes. Analysis methods have been developed to reduce damage to buildings and standards and codes have been revised. However, structures built at different times according to the different rules are still more likely to collapse . Moreover, even in the structures built according to the revised standards and codes, damage may occur in a large extent.In the seismic regions with high earthquake risk, after great earthquakes, researchers and scientists examine everything and they find out all the responsible ones and all mistakes. These researchers usually don’t know the behaviour of concrete, but speak up after all major earthquakes and publish the mistakes they found out as if they were the ones finding them for the first time. There have been great developments in the reinforced concrete building techniques and building materials recently. As a result of this, buildings are built in a much more qualified way. Nevertheless, in order to define earthquake performances of formerly built buildings, structural damages, caused by earthquakes so far, should be examined properly. Especially the old buildings in the seismic regions, should definitely be examined and maintenance not to have the same damages after any possible earthquake.So, in this presentation, structural damages caused by the earthquakes happened so far, reasons of these damages and the effects probably caused the increase of earthquake damages in the buildings are going to be presented. In addition to these, maintenance, the last step of forming a building is going to be emphasized.
