Abstract:

Traumatic reticuloperitonitis (TRP), also known as "hardware disease", is a primary healthconcern in cattle. However, its occurrence can extend to other ruminants, including sheep. Thispathological condition arises from the ingestion of sharp foreign objects, typically metallicwires or nails. These objects penetrate the reticulum, a specialized forestomach in ruminants, triggering inflammation and potentially leading to serious complications within the abdominalcavity. Postmortem examinations revealed traumatic reticulo-pericarditis (TRP) in four sheep, including one ram and three ewes. Gross pathological findings showed the penetration offoreign objects, specifically a large needle and three electrical wires, through the reticular walland into the pericardial sacs, regional artery, and myocardium. The ram exhibited acute cardiactamponade and hemothorax as the most prominent pathological features. In contrast, the ewesprimarily presented with pyothorax, pericardial enlargement and thickening, and peritonitis.Additionally, disseminated abscesses were observed in the spleens, lungs, and livers of theaffected animals. Microscopic analysis revealed fibrosis and inflammation characterized byneutrophilic and lymphocytic infiltrates in the pericardium, epicardium, and myocardium.Arcanobacterium pyogenes, a bacterial pathogen, was isolated from the fibrinopurulentexudates and disseminated abscesses found in the affected organs.
