Abstract:

This study assesses and compares the performance of two types of dampers, namely Tuned MassDampers (TMD) and Friction Tuned Mass Dampers (FTMD), in reducing displacement andacceleration of the top story of structures during seismic events. The study involves modeling a twodimensionalsteel frame in three different scenarios: without control, with TMD, and with FTMD,using the Endurance Time Method (ETM) with applied acceleration functions (ETAin۰۱-۰۳). Theresults demonstrate that the utilization of TMD leads to a reduction of ۲۲% and ۱۲% in displacementand acceleration, respectively, while implementing FTMD results in a ۲۵% and ۲۰% reduction at theMCE level. This research indicates that FTMD offers superior performance to TMD in mitigatingdisplacement and acceleration of the top floor of structures at the MCE level and is recommended asan effective method for improving the seismic performance of steel structures
