Abstract:

Liquefaction is one of the hazardous phenomena in geotechnical engineering. It can occur in loose, saturated sandy soils and saturated silts under specific conditions, where drainage is not possible, andwith sufficient intensity and duration of earthquakes. During liquefaction, the soil in the area behaveslike a viscous liquid, loses its ability to bear weight, and leads to movements on slopes and subsequentdamage to structures on the ground and underground pipelines. In this study, using numericalmodeling, the liquefaction potential in the Persian Gulf coastal areas has been investigated. Theresults, based on the applied earthquake record, showed that stone columns are an effective and costefficientmethod for reducing liquefaction. The optimal spacing and depth of the stone columns werealso studied and evaluated, identifying the most effective configuration.
