Abstract:
This short paper aims to touch on the issue of knowing and learning beyond one language, after the acquisition of the mother tongue, and that it elevates and enhances one’s view of the world and hence the promotion of wisdom. There are aspects inside each language which give you a view of the world; the new language provides a different angle from which one observes the surroundings. Participants of various age groups, levels of education, and both genders were asked whether it is a waste of time to know more than one language and why, disregarding how far they understand and speak another language apart from their mother tongue. The answer of more than eighty percent of the participants was a flat No. They believed that it was useful and their reasons were provided and listed accordingly. Knowing a second or a third language sounds to provide one with new angles to see the world around you, a thing which can simply be called more wisdom as you have the conflation of a couple of views one complementing the others, providing a more panoramic view of the world.
