Abstract:

Maternity and postnatal care are different from other types of healthcare for various reasons. Childbirth is unique in that healthcare workers are simultaneously responsible for two patients and is one of the few situations where individuals generally need significant physical and mental care. However, even healthy patients can suddenly be at risk, and the complications of childbirth can affect the mind and body of the mother and child for years. Since the design of midwifery centers mostly focuses on maintaining medical standards and therapeutic aspects, most of these spaces have a dry and soulless format. There has not been much attention paid to the mental and psychological needs of the mother and child, which in turn causes psychological problems in such spaces. In fact, meeting the psychological and emotional needs of the mother and child leads to their overall health improvement, which requires the enhancement of therapeutic spaces with a multi-faceted approach that many of these can be supported by spatial design. Furthermore, accurate and conscious architectural planning and design of a midwifery center, in order to create a suitable, safe, and pleasant environment for women and newborns, can significantly impact the provision of appropriate maternity services by doctors, nurses, and other midwifery center staff. Hence, this study, using a descriptive-analytical method and information-gathering tools such as articles and reputable research journals, library resources, and online resources, aims to design a midwifery center with the approach of enhancing the health level of mother and child in Qom province.
