Abstract:

This review article aims to analyze and explain the role of participatory planning within urban planning theories. For this study, a systematic review method was utilized as a qualitative approach, enabling the collection, evaluation, and comprehensive analysis of relevant literature on the topic. Using searches in reputable scientific databases, articles related to participatory planning and urban planning theories from the past two decades were examined. The findings of this research reveal that participatory planning, as an innovative approach, emphasizes the active involvement of citizens in urban decision-making processes, particularly in areas such as sustainable development, social justice, and urban regeneration. This approach has positive effects on improving urban quality of life and reducing inequalities. Furthermore, the article provides practical suggestions for enhancing the use of participatory approaches in urban planning. The results of this study can also serve as a foundation for future research on new models of social participation and the challenges of implementing participatory planning in urban communities.
