Abstract:

Salinity and drought are of limitations in agricultural production in arid and semi-arid areas, especially Iran. To evaluate the effect of salinity and drought stress effect on the germination and seedling growth of the pinto beans (including local masses of Khoy and Shahindezh), two separate factorial tests were done in a completely randomized design with three replications in Agricultural and Natural Resources Research Center of West Azerbaijan Province. Salinity and drought stress treatments included different levels of osmotic potential of sodium chloride and polyethylene glycol ۶۰۰۰ in three levels of -۴, -۸, and -۱۲ bar with control treatment (distilled water). The results showed that applying the levels of salinity and drought had significant effects on all traits and decreasing on the studied all traits, including the percentage of germination, rate of germination, radicle length, plumule length, and fresh weight of seedling. The study of correlation coefficients showed that among all studied traits under salinity and drought stresses, there is a significant positive correlations, as in the study of drought stress, the maximum and minimum values of correlation coefficients, orderly contained the traits of plumule length with fresh weight of seedling were (r=۰.۹۵۵), and rate of germination with radicle length were (r=۰.۸۸۶), while in the study of salinity, maximum and minimum values of correlation coefficients, orderly contained the traits of radicle length with fresh weight of seedling (r=۰.۸۸۶), and fresh weight of seedling with percentage of germination were (r=۰.۷۳۷). So we can use the traits of plumule length under drought stress condition and the radicle length under salt stress condition as evaluation and selection criteria of pinto beans tolerating these stresses and more study contract.
