Abstract:
The issue of water contamination has prompted significant research into sustainable remediation techniques. Bio-based polymers, both synthetic and natural, have emerged as eco-friendly options for pollutant extraction due to their biodegradability, renewability, and customizable properties. This review explores recent advancements in utilizing bio-based polymeric materials for water purification, highlighting their effectiveness in removing heavy metals, organic contaminants, and emerging pollutants. It also considers various performance evaluation criteria, including adsorption capacity and the impact of factors like pH, temperature, and pollutant concentration, alongside comparisons to traditional materials. Additionally, the potential for revitalizing and reusing bio-based polymeric adsorbents to enhance their practical application is examined. Finally, the challenges related to the implementation of bio-based polymers—such as scalability, stability, and cost-effectiveness—are addressed, along with future opportunities for improving their efficiency and integration into sustainable water treatment systems.
