Abstract:
Viral and non-viral gene therapy has progressed in the treatment of neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Advances in viral vector technology have improved the accuracy and efficiency of giving medical genes in the affected brain areas. In one of the most promising regions, adenoviral and lentiviral vectors have been used to give genes that encroach neurotrophic factors such as GDNF (glial cell-technical neurotrophic factors), which can help protect dopaminergic neurons. Viral vectors are being used to introduce genes that can produce enzymes such as beta-secret inhibitors or anti-amyloid proteins that target the accumulation of amyloid plaques, a complication of Alzheimer's.
