Adaptability Strategies and Related Evaluation in Samples of Contemporary Iranian Housing

Adaptability has traditionally been realized as a general approach in traditional architecture. In contemporary times, alongside technological advancements and need for sustainable developments, adaptability has been achieved through diverse and multiple approaches, each focusing on adaptability from a particular perspective. The main question of this research is: What are the primary strategies for adaptability, and to what extent are they applied in contemporary Iranian housing? Accordingly, the aim of this study is to identify adaptability capabilities and analyze existing approaches based on them. The research method is a qualitative approach based on logical argumentation and qualitative analysis of the samples. In this context, the research introduces three capabilities: 'soft connectivity between areas,' 'variety and multiplicity of areas,' and 'multi-functional areas.' The evaluation shows that these capabilities have not been sufficiently considered in contemporary project samples. It appears that in contemporary designs, in the short term, more attention is given to multi-functional spaces. Also, in the long term, greater importance is placed on the expandability and contractibility of the design, the ability to merge and separate public and private zones, the ability to merge and separate public zones, and the ability to merge and separate private zones.
