Abstract:
Ever‐increasing stringent legislations imposed by emission regulatory organizations on emissions from enginesmake achieving near zero emission combustion strategies more challenging. The role of cars is being reviewedfrom the point of view of preserving the global environment and it has led to the development of vehicles thatare environment friendly. At same time, vehicles are also required with more comfort and better drivability thanever before. Double acting internal combustion engines, having combustion chamber at both side of the piston, isone of the desirable concepts in this industry due to their higher Power to engine weight ratio. The mainchallenges in this concept are sealing and lubrication of contact area. If it is operated on 4‐stroke cycle the outputpower would be higher than 2‐stroke engine while satisfying all the emission legislation necessities. In thisstudy, a new mechanism is proposed in which the forthcoming of future manufacturing feature is adopted from anew VCR mechanism of MCE5 and concentrated lubrication mechanism is applied to overcome the recentchallenges in contact area lubrication. Lower noise production due to lighter crank shaft with lower eccentricitywould be achievable while the lighter and more powerful engine would result. Summary of some importantpatents is mentioned in which the capability of the mechanism would be predicted.
