Application of ANN in Prediction of Wave Run up in Swash Zone

Swash zone constitutes the area of beach where the waves run up and run down after traveling towards the shoreline. Wave run-up is the maximum elevation of wave uprush above still-waterlevel to which the water rises on the beach or structure. To accomplish a safe design of beachnourishments and/or coastal structures, it is important to estimate an optimized crest height toprevent sea water passing into the beach. Existing empirical relationships for prediction of wave run-up are mainly based on regression methods based on the experimental data. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been used to simulate several complicated coastal engineering problems. ANNs are known as flexible modeling tools with capabilities of learning the mathematicalmapping between input and output variables of nonlinear systems. Hence, it is essential to use intelligent computational tools to the existing data to present a more accurate prediction model. In this study, the wave run-up is modeled using an ANN model and the model result is compared with the available empirical formula.
