Abstract:

Geosequestration is the process of pumping CO٢ into deep geological formations such as coalbeds to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Studying gastransport mechanisms in coal seams is crucial in determining the suitable coal formations for geosequestration, estimating storage capacity and predicting the integrity of storage. Due tothe dual porosity nature of coal, CO٢ transport is a combination of viscous flow and Fickiandiffusion. Moreover, CO٢ is adsorbed by coal and leads to a swelling which changes the porous structure of coal and its permeability. This paper provides an overview of the recent studies on transport phenomena and identifies the research gaps in this area
