Abstract:

Monitoring tool wear in machining processes is of high importance in many precise industrialapplications. In this paper, tool wear estimation is considered by the use of tool vibration signals.During a cutting process, tool acceleration signals are acquired by a miniature accelerometerand wear sensitive features is derived from the raw signals. Finally, the correlationbetween tool wear and the features which are dispersion ratio of each vibration modes of thetool is found.It is shown that the selected features are in relation with natural modes of vibrationof tool/holder assembly. The important property of the feature is that is it independent from cutting conditions and it can be used in online tool wear estimation algorithms
