The characteristic of flow over a rough solid obstacle is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The effect of roughness on the hydrodynamic stability of two-dimensional flow is investigated with 5 10 5× atoms. The liquid argon was considered as working fluid. The solid obstacle, which is a structure of atoms placed on the perimeter of a cylinder with diameter D, was modeled with specified surface roughness. The solid atoms are tethered with a Hookean spring and are allowed to vibrate around their equilibrium coordinates. The results for five different degrees of surface roughness indicate that the atomic roughness can influence the hydrodynamic stability of the flow. The effect of higher degree of roughness on periodic shedding of nanovortices is more pronounced.
