Abstract:

The finite element software Ls-Dyna is used to analyze several possible initial geometric forms for the hydro-bulging of toroidal vessels and elbows. Several criteria for evaluating product quality are suggested to assess the advantages of the alternatives. These criteria are cross-section roundness, meridional elongation, wall thickness reduction, maximum residual stress, surface wrinkling, and fluctuation of the cross section diameter. Some other factors such as welding and heat affected zone are also investigated. The results presented indicate that hydro-bulging has some advantages relative to conventional manufacturing, and that finite element analysis can play a role in the planning of the processes.
