Abstract:
Heat integration was used to develop retrofit design modifications of heat exchanger network for fluid catalytic cracking plant. The objectives were threefold: (i) to assess the performance of one retrofit targeting procedure available for retrofit designs of heat exchanger networks; (ii) to assess the impact of economic selection criteria on the optimum retrofit design; (iii) to assess the impact of capital and energy cost uncertainty on the selection of, and economic return from, optimum retrofit designs. The targeting and design techniques for retrofit projects were reviewed. The areaefficiency method was selected for targeting and the network pinch method was used to identify retrofit design options. For each economic criteria and cost uncertainty scenario assessed, 9 separate designs were developed and the optimum identified. The areaefficiency targeting method did not reflect fully the optimum designs generated by the retrofit design procedure in this case. The impact of alternative economic criteria was significant. Failing to use the appropriate economic criteria may result in a significantly less than optimal desig The impact of economic uncertainty on the outcome from the retrofit design procedure has a significant impact on the optimum desig Capital and energy cost uncertainty represented a significant risk to the economic return from investment in retrofit projects when not treated properly.
