Abstract:
Application of biological treatment system using white rot fungi, became an intresting alternative for treatment of water or wastewater contaminated with persistant organic pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Packed bed bioreactor using white rot fungi Phanerochaete chrysosporiumwas evaluated for degradation of PAHs in synthetic polluted wastewater. By means of their Ligninolytic enzymes, white rot fungi have significant potential to metabolize organic pollutants such as PAHs. Different feed flow rates as well as initial PAH concentrations in feed waretested. Removal efficiency of PAH up to 98% and the enzyme activity of 57 and 426 UL-1 for MnP and LiP, respectively, were obtained.
