Abstract:

This research work investigates physico-chemical properties and the exhaust emission of the blended fuel and standard diesel. Diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (DGM) is hopeful alternative fuel as well as fuel additive to reduce smoke emission in heavy-duty diesel engine due to high oxygen content of it. The addition of DGM to the standard diesel fuel caused significant changes in cetane index, viscosity and flash point temperature, but density was not change significantly. Experimental study on exhaust emission was carried out on ECE R-96 8-modes cycle. The result show that in all modes, the average smoke reduction rates of DGM-Diesel fuel blend was 20.5% of that of standard diesel respectively. NOx emission decreased in modes 5,6 and 7 (maximum torque speed range) more than in modes 1,2,3 and 4 (rated power speed range). By use of DGM, BSHC increased but BSCO decreased. In general low smoke and CO emission was measured with the DGM-Diesel fuel blend
