FACTS for improvement of transmission capability and availability in power systems

Technically, limitations on power transmission capability and availability can always be overcome by adding of new transmission facilities. This, however, may not be practicable or desirable in the real case, for a variety of reasons. Also, AC power transmission networks are not always easily controlled to direct the flow of power. However, there are new opportunities available through the development of high power electronics, which can make present transmission systems more flexible. Thus, FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems), is a highly useful option, from technical, economic and environmental points of view, to increase the utilization and stability of a transmission grid. The paper presents some salient design features as well as recent operational experience of FACTS. devices for improving of transmission capability and availability in power grids in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way.
