Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) are the simplest form of DNA variation among individuals. These variations can provide clues to the adaptive processes and population histories that have played roles in the evolution of species. In addition, natural DNA polymorphisms form the basis for the intraspecific variation that is of great relevance to breeders. Also, identification of numerou variations in genes and analysis of their effects may lead to a better understanding of their impact on gene function. A number of different techniques for identifying SNPs have been developed but all have their limitations.
