Abstract:

Deciding the optimal operating mode for Distributed Generation (DG) is of a crucial importance in increasing the efficiency of these resources. This paper presents a method to determine optimal operating strategy for distributed generation (DG) according to the improvement of the reliability index. The considered operation mode of this paper include, peak shaving, standby and islanding mode. The use of DG for peak shaving could reduce the overall system operating cost and its use as standby power could reduce the customer interruption cost. On the other hand, if DG is employed at islanding mode the reliability of the distribution network could be increased. The reliability worth, reliability indices and the power cost evaluations are required to determine whether DG should be operated for peak shaving, islanding or as standby power. In this paper four different scenarios are considered to obtain the optimal operation strategy. The reliability indexes is used in the strategy proposed to determine the optimal operating decision for the DG. In addition, Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) is incorporated, in order to determine the occurrence and duration of the failure of each distribution network element. Using the approach proposed in this paper, the distribution companies could determine the optimal operating strategy for their DG. To validate the proposed strategy, bus 2 of standard distribution network of RTBS is simulated in MATLAB software and the simulation result are presented and discussed.
