Abstract:

The objective of this investigation was to develop a new class of surgical suture in the form of nanofiber yarnusing two differently charged nozzles. For this achievement Poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA), a bioabsorbablepolymer, was electrospun. nanofiber yarn was characterised in terms of application as suture. In order to improve themechanical properties, heat setting process was carried out on nanofiber yarn. Mechanical prtoperties and in vitrodegradation of nanofiber yarn were investigated and results showed strength and E-modulus after heat setting was63.7MPa, 2.7GPa respectively. In vitro studies showed degradation rate of nanofiber yarn is extremely fast thancommercial suture due to greater surface area of nanofibers exposed to hydrolysis.
