Abstract:

The purpose of this research was to investigate a soluble nancatalyst added to biodiesel fuel to decreaseemissions and improve diesel engine performance parameters i.e. power, torque and brake specific fuel consumption(bsfc). The amide-functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes, was added to biodiesel fuel at three concentrations (10,25 and 50 ppm). The results obtained revealed that the proper dispersion along with improving burn rate of the nanosizedcatalyst particles resulted in significant overall improvements in the combustion parameters. These improvementswere significantly larger in fuel containing 50 ppm of the catalyst BD(50 ppm) compared to BD(10ppm) and BD(25ppm). Theinnovated fuel reduced all emissions i.e. nitrogen oxide compounds (NOx), unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and carbonmonoxide (CO) by up to 5.82%, 8.53% and 2.15%, in BD(50 ppm) and increased engine performance parameters i.e.power and torque by up to 3.38%, 2.24%, respectively, and decreased bsfc by 1.88% compared to biodiesel.
