Abstract:

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) due to their magnetic properties are extensively used for severalbiomedical applications, including drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), contrast enhancement, tissuerepair and magnetic hyperthermia cancer treatment. This extensive application of iron oxide nanoparticles causing anincreased human exposure. Effects of SPION on serum cytokines and inflammatory response has not yet wellunderstood. In the present study here, we evaluated toxicity effects of SPION on some most important serum cytokinesin Wistar rat. In this study, animals were injected intravenously with a single dose of iron oxide nanoparticles atvarying dose levels (50, 200 and 800 mg/kg). Serum cytokines levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) andinterleukin 1 (IL-1), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and interferon-γ (INF-γ) were determined. The findings of the presentinvestigation indicate SPION injection induced a significant increase on serum TNF-α, IL-1, IL-6 and INF-γ after 14thday of treatment. In conclusion, results demonstrated intravenous injection of superparamagnetic iron oxidenanoparticles induces inflammation and cytokines changes in experimented Wistar rats.
