Abstract:
Following the Northridge earthquake of 1994, a significant number of steelmoment resisting structural systems were damaged. Several studies havebeen conducted to improve the seismic performance of steel structures andspecially their beam-to-column connections. One of the problems that themoment connections are in face with it, is the rupture of connection plate inbeam to column connection place. The connection of beam to Box-Built-Column with flange-plates is one of the most common type of connections.This study elucidates three strategies for reducing rupture probability ofbottom flange-plate in connection place. In the first strategy, a verticalplate parallel to the column web located in center of the panel zone (totalthickness of the vertical plate and two column webs are equal to the totalthickness of two webs in primary column). In the second strategy as thearea section of the bottom flange plate is constant, the plate wide isincreased. Finally in the third strategy, the area sections of flange plates inboth specimens are same; the difference between them is that the bottomflange plate in one of specimens is curved. The results indicate that in allthree strategies rupture index of the connection dropped. As an example,the second strategy results in thirty percent decrease in the maximumrupture index of connection.
