Abstract:

Nowadays, pipelines have various usages such as water and energy supply systems, communication services. Furthermore, the pipelines are affected by many types of loadin various parts of the world [1]. This paper study presents the results of seismicbehavior of buried pipeline induced by earthquake. For this investigation, the waterconveyance from Zarrine Rood to Tabriz project pipelines were studied. The materialnonlinearities associated with pipe-material and soil, and geometric nonlinearityassociated seismic loads induced by earthquake were incorporated in the analysis.Selecting of earthquake records were according to seismic zonation of regions. TheGeotechnical characteristics of soil were selected according to studies of MahabGhodssConsulting Engineering Co, on this project. Response analysis of buried pipelines issomewhat complex since it considers the three-dimensional dynamic analysis ofthe soil-pipeline interaction under multipoint earthquake excitation[2]. Therefore, arigorous analysis is impossible. For this reason, ABAQUS, which is used forgeneral Finite Element Analysis (FEA), was chosen in order to estimate failureaspects of buried pipelines. The result showed the earthquake has more effect on inclined ground paths than straightone. The maximum displacement is 2.219 cm for section 1 and the minimum amount is0.649 cm for section 5. The maximum stress is 35.6 MPa for section 1 and the minimumamount is 13 MPa for section 5. Because all the stresses are less than yield stress ofpipeline so there is no plastic strain and deformation.
