Abstract:
Abstract Chitosan-iron oxide nanocomposite (CH-FeO) was synthesized and its functional groups were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Then CH-FeO used as low cost and highly adsorbent for removal of the cationic dye Methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The parameters influencing adsorption (aqueous phase pH, ionic strength, amount of adsorbent, adsorbent-water mixing time) were assessed and optimized. It was found that 0.08 g of CH-FeO adsorbent removed 78% of the dye (with initial concentration 10 mg/L) from 50 mL of water at pH > 4 after 60 min at 25°C while chitosan removed only 20%. The CH-FeO had above 50% adsorption uptake capacity after three regeneration cycles. The findings of this study revealed that CH-FeO is a potential adsorbent for cationic dye pollution remediation.
