Analysis of the seepage issue in a tailings dam, both reservoir loss to groundwater and the potential forseepage through the embankment, are probably the most important issues. Appropriate design measuresmust be taken to manage seepage in a way that meets environmental requirements without jeopardisingembankment stability and future raising options. For determining potential environmental impacts, thechemical composition of tailings seepage is important. The chemical reagents used in mining processes maybe present in the tailings material. Seepage controls are typically evaluated in the early phases ofimpoundment design. The objectives are to maintain embankment stability, decrease water losses, andmaintain water-quality at the site.
