Abstract:

The aim of this study was to assess ESP needs and challenges of MA students majoring in Persian Literature at Velayat University by considering perspectives of both students and teacher on the textbook as well as the course. 8 students of the class and also the teacher participated in this research. Class observation and interviews were conducted; a researcher-made questionnaire was distributed among the students. The results obtained revealed that both the students and teacher are satisfied with the textbook. They expect revision and reconsideration of the course to increase the motivation of the students to improve their language proficiency at the same time that it helps them to fulfill their needs. Due to deficient background knowledge of the students as the main problem regarding students, grouping them on the basis of proficiency level, encouraging them to be active whether inside or outside of the classroom, offered as the main recommendations by teacher to solve the problems.
